I find the whole Mel Gibson fiasco fabulously entertaining and instructive. It seems obvious to me that the current reaction to Mel is partially based on their inability to make anti-Semitic charges stick to the POTC. Yes Mel Gibson has anti-Semitic tendencies, after all his dad is way out on the Nazi fringe. I think it also seems obvious that Mel knows these feelings and tries to fight them. The reaction of the MSM seems out of proportion to what was a rather mild drunken outburst.
At the same time it was always surprising to me how much the church in the US embraced what was a bad movie. The POTC was the Bataan Death March of films. It lacked context, overdid and gloried in the violence, and strayed factually from the event. The modern church never seems to pick its heroes well.
